Lucknow - City of Nawabs

Lucknow once ruled by Mughals is a delight for historians. Full of ‘tehzeebs’ meaning manners there is perfect blend of the Muslim, Hindu and Sikh community here. Lucknow is famous for ancient monuments, Mughalai cuisine, Chikan Work, and of course the ‘Lucknowi hospitality.’ People speak Urdu and Lucknowi Hindi known as purest Hindi. There is a lot to explore in this city situated on the banks of the river Gomti.

Major Attractions of Lucknow:

  • Bara Imambara

    Also called Asfi Imambara this is one of the most popular tourist locations in Lucknow. The structure made of only Lakhanui Bricks & Lime Plaster is a popular place of worship during the festival of Muharram. The Crown and Grave of Nawab Asaf-ud-Dowlah is housed in the massive Central Hall. Check the complex maze called Bhul Bhulaiya in Upper Hall.

  • Chhota Imambara

    This is an extravagant glittering structure with gold-plated domes and two massive triple –arched entrances. There are large drums beaten to announce the hour of the day in Naubat Khana / Jilo Khana. Two enormous human structures stand at the gate of this beautiful structure with water enclosure in the compound. There are four tombs/graves of the King and his family members here.

  • Constantia

    The history of this gold looking glorious structure dates back to mid 1800s. This is also famously called the 'La Martiniere School'. This was the palatial residence of a French Major General called Claude Martin. His tomb lies inside this ancient monument.

  • Lucknow Zoological Garden

    Back in 1921 the Prince of Whales visited here. To commemorate the Royal Highness’ visit the Lucknow Zoo was established. Endangered and exotic wildlife exist spread over 71.6 acres of grasslands. This includes Hoolock Gibbon, Bengal /white tiger, Golden Peasant to name just a few.

  • Indira Gandhi Planetarium

    The structure surrounded by lovely fountains is made in the design of the planet Saturn. This space wonderland is made for wannabe /student astronomers to study and experience the feel of space. Inside the planetarium people travel through virtual ‘space’ and celestial bodies in a fast- forward way.

  • Begum Hazrat Mahal Park

    This is the best place if for a pleasant morning/evening walk or to spend quiet tranquil time. The structure holds revered historical prominence as Begum Hazrat Mahal led the rebellion of British Rule during the First Independence War. The park is colorfully decorated and illumined during festival time adding to its beauty.

Best Time to Visit Lucknow

As summers are hot and dry, monsoons are not comfortable due to rains it is advisable to visit in winter. During moths of November to March the weather is cool but sunny too making it the ideal time period to visit Lucknow.

How to Reach Lucknow

The Lucknow Amausi Airport has regular flights to major cities. There are number of railway lines and Railway Junctions the common one being Lucknow Charbagh (LKO). Others are BNZ, AMG, ML, UTR, ASH, LJN, DL, GTNR & LC. There are several busses to Bus Station Lucknow / Alambagh.

Shopping in Lucknow

Alambagh Market is a busy and noisy place to shop anything. Janpath Market in heart of the city is famous for chikankari work for men and women. 'Chowk' is another hub for chikan garments and ittar of flowers. Shop carved ivory items and handmade Nagra Footwear here. Nakhas Market is a shopper's paradise with sub-markets -Vegetable Market, Nakhas Bazar and Bird Market. Shop best Zardozi embroidery Garments, second- hand goods, wooden items and electric spares. Savour delicious street food, kebabs and paan too. There are reasonably priced wedding attires & jewellery at Aminabad bazaar and others like books and knick-knacks too. After a tiresome shopping trip savour local delicacies including Tunday Kababi and Prakash Kulfi as there are several food joints.
